Week 31

 Dear Parents and Students,

I would first like to thank all parents for taking time out of your busy schedules to come in to see me. Communication is integral to the healthy development of your children, and it is good to be able to discuss the progress of your kids, and share viewpoints of how to support and encourage the students of Grade 4.

In the Classroom:

Maths

We began Topic 17 this week, in which we learned how to read bar graphs, create line plots, interpret points, and recognize outliers. We also sat our benchmark and cumulative tests this week, which cover all of the work we have done from the beginning of the year until now. We will continue with Topic 17 throughout next week.

Literacy Workshop

We began our final major writing assignment for the year, Writing to Persuade. We have used the early part of the week to plan and draft our essays, and we will be revising and proofreading our work next week. We will then finish publishing on Wednesday, and hold a publishing party on Thursday.

Science

We extended our study of how the eye works this week by adding an iris and smaller pupil to our working model. We then worked in pairs to observe how the iris and pupil function to affect what we see. Next week, we will review some of what we have learned over the past several weeks, and we will apply what we know to one last practical challenge.

Social Studies

This week, we have been learning about the American West and Southwest as we begin preparing for our next Social Studies project. Next week, we will briefly review both regions, and then students will select a region or specific topic that interests them. We will then begin researching our chosen topic and start working on our presentations, which will be shared in the coming weeks.

Other important information

Next week will be another shortened week as Labour Day will be observed on Friday, and the school will be closed. On Wednesday, we will hold our annual Art Exhibition in the library. This will be open to students only on Wednesday, but will be open for all parents to visit on Thursday, which will also be the day of our April assembly. I hope you all enjoy your weekend, and I’ll see all students on Monday!
