Dear Parents and Students,
The finer weather for most of this week has put us all in good spirits ahead of the Spring Break. As always, we have been busy in the classroom, complete with a Mad Tea Party and the monthly assembly.
In the Classroom:
Maths
We began our study of customary units, including pints, quarts, gallons, ounces, pounds and tons. We have also begun our studies of metric units of length and capacity, and we will continue with mass, time, and temperature after the break.
Literacy Workshop
We have completed the entire story of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and spent the latter part of the week creating our own tributes to the book. We completed the week with our Mad Tea Party on Friday. After the break, we will begin our next major writing assignment: Writing an Opinion.
Science
The fun has continued during our Life Science studies this week, as we designed a working model of an eye. So far, we have investigated how the lens of the eye refracts and projects light to the retina, from which our brain receives the signals to allow us to see. We will continue this investigation in a few weeks’ time. Our first week back after the break will be focused on our Science Fair projects. We will set up and practise on Tuesday, 7th April, our in-class presentations will be taking place on Wednesday, and then the big day is on Thursday, 9th April.
Social Studies
This week, our focus was on transportation in the Midwest, around the time of the Industrial Revolution. We read about how the introduction of the steam engine made significant changes throughout the Midwest, its industries, and economy. After the break we will be looking at what the region is like today, with a focus on urbanisation and multiculturalism.
Other important information
I hope everybody has a wonderful Spring Break, and that all of your travels are safe. I look forward to seeing everybody refreshed and ready to go on Tuesday, 7th April.
