Week 21

 Dear Parents and Students,

We’ve enjoyed a ‘regular’ week this week, ending with our monthly assembly. In class, we have been busy as usual.

In the Classroom:

Maths

We completed Topic 12 this week, which is dedicated to decimals. We began the topic by learning to identify place value, and then moved on to comparing decimals, and then converting fractions to decimals and vice-versa. We will review the topic on Monday, with the topic test to take place Tuesday.

Literacy Workshop

We had fun reading Heat Wave!, which is a tall tale about how a girl saves her farm from a sudden spell of hot weather. The story is rich in hyperbole and exaggeration, which made for an entertaining and engaging discussion. Next week, we will apply these literary techniques by writing our own tall tales. In grammar, we have completed our unit on adjectives and have begun a special activity that connects our learning to next week’s Valentine’s Day celebration.

Science

We began discussing Science Fair topics in class, and we are still finalising partners and plans for our preliminary research. We also spent some more time working with electricity, and completing our electric circuits.

Social Studies

We completed our study of Ports in the Southeast this week, and learned about international shipping, including the invention of the shipping container, and how it has allowed us to enjoy cheaper imported goods. We will review the chapter next week. There will be no test for this chapter, but what we have learned will be included in a unit test that will take place in a few weeks’ time.
