Week 15

 Dear Parents and Students,

We’ve had a particularly eventful week, with our field trip on Tuesday, Thanksgiving lunch and Peter Pan performance on Thursday, then finishing with our monthly assembly on Friday. In addition to all of these activities, we have had a busy week in the classroom as usual.

In the Classroom:

Maths

On Wednesday, we reviewed Topic 8, and the topic test took place on Thursday. We also took a benchmark assessment on Friday. This required no preparation, as it simply measures students’ retention of the concepts covered so far this year. Next week, we will begin Topic 9, which introduces geometry, and we will continue exploring this topic throughout the week.

Literacy Workshop

We have completed our grammar unit dedicated to verbs, and spent some time reviewing the key concepts. We have also begun drafting our own alternative fairy tales, inspired by Cendrillon, a Caribbean retelling of Cinderella. We will publish these next week, and enjoy reading them at our publishing party on Friday.

Science

We continued with our unit dedicated to Physical Science this week with a study of energy and motion. Of course, we also had our visit to the Taichung Earthquake Museum, which has been a great opportunity to see real examples of some of the effects of rapid surface changes to the Earth. It was also an excellent way to reflect on what we have learned about the nature of earthquakes, tsunamis, and landslides. Photos from the field trip can be found via the link at the bottom of this post.

Social Studies

We have now completed our study of how the Northeast USA has changed from the time of European settlement to the present, including the impact of the Industrial Revolution on life in the region. We will review the chapter next week, and an open-book minor test will be held on Thursday.

Other important information

Thank you to all the parents who joined us to watch the Performing Arts Club’s presentation of Highlights from Peter Pan. Next week will be a more typical school week. Please note that clubs have now finished for the term on Mondays and Wednesdays, and students will be dismissed at the end of regular classes.

I hope you all enjoy your weekend, and I will see everyone on Monday!
