Week 11

 Dear Parents and Students,

While the weather threatened to quite literally rain on our parade this week, we were lucky enough to enjoy the SD Halloween Carnival on Tuesday in almost-dry conditions, and then of course we enjoyed finer weather for our own parade and performances on Friday. Thank you to all parents for your time and effort in helping your children with costumes, and also to those of you who were able to join us on the day. It is always a thrill for the children to share their experiences with family. Thanks also to Ms Lu, for all of the hard work with each class’s performance!

In the Classroom:

Maths

We have finished Topic 6, which was a very short topic dedicated to algebra, and we held the topic test on Wednesday. We have already begun Topic 7, which is another short topic that reviews and extends what we know about multiplication.

Literacy Workshop

We finished publishing our Personal Narrative Stories, and celebrated our work with a Publishing Party on Friday. Next week, we will return to studying in our Literacy Circles, with a new story titled A Very Important Day.

Science

We have finally completed our mystery surrounding the Ashfall Fossil Beds in Nebraska,

and we have begun to review what we know about slow and rapid surface changes. We will continue our review next week, while also studying the important role water plays in

our lives and on our planet. Our unit test will take place next Friday .

Social Studies

We held our open-book chapter test on Thursday, and we will soon begin the next topic in our books, which will focus on the Northeast region of the United States of America. As we have done since the beginning of the year, we will use the USA as a model, and make comparisons and contrasts between the USA and other parts of the world.

Other important information

Along with report cards, forms were sent home Tuesday to arrange parent/teacher interviews for the week beginning Monday, 10th November. If you haven’t done so already, please complete the form and return it as soon as possible. Please also try to list a number of available times in order of preference. I will do my best to accommodate everybody. Parents, I look forward to meeting you all then! In the meantime, have a restful weekend, and students, I’ll see you all again on Monday.
