Dear Parents and Students,
We have completed yet another busy week in Grade 4, being productive as always, and finishing with the September assembly.
In the Classroom:
Maths
We have spent the week working through Topic 4, which is dedicated to division. We have compared different methods and strategies used to divide, and acknowledged the properties of division, such as dividing by one, dividing a number by itself, and dividing zero by another number. We will review the topic on Monday, and the topic test will take place Wednesday.
Literacy Workshop
We spent most of the week reading Return to The Titanic. This was an interesting book that told two stories at once. One story was about the experiences of a survivor of the infamous tragedy, and the other was about the mission to find the wreck of the Titanic at the bottom of the ocean. We paid particular attention to the writer’s craft, and how each new chapter was introduced in a way that immediately engages the reader. Next week, we will begin our next story, Tomas and the Library Lady.
Science
This week, we continued our study of rocks and minerals by learning how they form, break down, and change into sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous types as they move through the rock cycle. We enjoyed comparing the pictures in our books with the real rock samples we have in class. Next week, we’ll take a closer look at weathering and erosion with a practical lab activity.
Social Studies
We began the week learning about people and populations. We have also spent some time preparing for our upcoming minor presentation assignment about patriotism. Everyone has chosen a country to represent, and we will all enjoy learning from one another when we take turns to present our work next Friday, 3rd October.
Other important information
Next Monday will be a public holiday as we celebrate Confucius Day / Teachers Day. I hope you all enjoy the long weekend, and I’ll see everyone Tuesday!
